Dare Ogundare, the commissioner of police in Ekiti State, displayed 17 suspects on Friday for crimes including murder, kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and arson.
During the procession, the CP, who was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Commander, Sunday Abutu, stated that efforts were being made to apprehend the other gang members who had escaped.
He said, “On September 15, 2023, at around 09:30 hours, the command’s Rapid Response Squad immediately mobilized to the scene and arrested some suspected cultists after receiving a credible tip that they were preparing another armed robbery attack from their hideout in Ikere Ekiti, where they frequently robbed innocent citizens of their valuables.
Adewumi Gbenga, Gideon Samson, Ogundare Tobi, Adamolekun Lekan, Olanipekun Daniel, Daramola Tope, Mayowa Ojo, Alaba Ayobami, Aremo Olatunji Oladele, Adebayo Peter, and Abiodun Bosede were among the accused detained.
Afao Divisional Police Headquarters, Ikere-Ekiti was attacked and set ablaze during the #EndSARS protest in 2020, and the suspects carted away weapons and valuables from the stations, according to the investigation, which also revealed that one AK-47 rifle was recovered from the suspects.
