“2023 Polls Reveal Nigerian Weariness with APC – Tunde Bakare”

Pastor Tunde Bakare, leader of Citadel Global Community Church, highlighted that the 2023 election results revealed Nigerians’ weariness with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during a State of the Nation Broadcast in Lagos, Bakare, who ran in the 2022 APC presidential primary, noted that the party had strayed from its founding principles. He warned the APC, emphasizing that the recent election’s decreased support indicated the public’s disillusionment.

Bakare observed that the APC’s votes in the 2023 presidential election dropped from previous years, signaling a loss of backing. He acknowledged that the APC’s victory was challenged in court, and stated that only divisions within the opposing parties prevented a more substantial win against the APC.

During the February 2023 election, President Bola Tinubu secured victory with 8,794,726 votes, followed by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP with 6,984,520 votes and Labour Party’s Obi with 6,101,533 votes. However, the election’s outcome is contested at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal by the PDP and LP.

Bakare criticized the APC’s transformation into a platform lacking ideology, attracting opportunistic politicians who prioritize power over principles. The party’s shift from its progressive roots, marked by investments in education and healthcare, led to economic hardship due to “anti-people policies.”

In essence, Pastor Bakare emphasized the public’s discontent with the APC’s deviation from its original values, as evidenced by the 2023 election results and subsequent challenges in court. He underscored the need for a return to the party’s initial progressive and inclusive stance to address Nigeria’s challenges effectively.
