3 Important Marriage Struggles: Resisting Divorce

Navigating the Challenges of Marriage and Resisting Divorce.

In todays society, the sanctity of marriage is besieged by the tempests of transient trials and the allure of immediate relief through divorce, it behooves us to hearken back to the immutable truths of Scripture and the profound teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. The notion that a suggestion to divorce emanates from anything but the adversary is a perilous misconception. It is a craftily presented potion, silvered and shining, promising ease and solace. Yet, in the wake of its consumption, one finds not relief but regret; for the devil, the father of lies, has traded but a momentary ease for a lifetime’s burden of sorrow. ” Divorce always comes from the devil. Sometimes it feels like it will make life easier, and be a silver pill to solve problems, but few years after, you realize the devil sold you a dummy.

Beloved, Fight for your marriage, storms come and storms pass… so, don’t just give it to devil in a silver platter.” Thus, it is incumbent upon us to gird ourselves with the full armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).

The sacred covenant of marriage, instituted by God Himself at the dawn of creation, is not merely a contract between two souls but a divine ordinance, a mirror of Christ’s unyielding love for His church. As such, the dissolution of this bond is grievous to the Lord. The prophet Malachi declares, “For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away (Divorce): for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously” (Malachi 2:16). God’s disdain for divorce is palpable, a testament to the sanctity with which He regards the marital union.

Many erroneously believe that the Lord has provided a narrow path for the gravest of transgressions by quoting Matthew 5:32 “But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication…..,” (Matthew 5:32). Here we can boldly read and understand that fornication cannot happen inside marriage but outside of it, hence there’s no room or license for divorce.

In the face of marital tempests, we are exhorted to arm ourselves with three principal weapons: to be ever polite, prayerful, and principled. Apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Ephesians, enjoins us to bear with one another in love, endeavoring to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:2-3). Politeness, thus, is not a mere social grace but a manifestation of the love and respect that should permeate a Christian marriage.

Prayerfulness, the second of our armaments, is our direct line to the divine, a means by which we may seek guidance, strength, and solace from the Lord. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6). A marriage steeped in prayer is fortified against the assaults of the enemy, anchored in the grace of God.

Lastly dear reader, to be principled is to adhere steadfastly to the precepts and commandments of the Lord, governing our actions not by the fleeting dictates of emotion but by the eternal truths of Scripture. “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness” (Colossians 3:14). Love, the very essence of God’s nature, is the principle above all that should guide our conduct within the covenant of marriage.

Brethren, let us not be beguiled by the siren call of divorce, a remedy that in truth is no remedy at all. Rather, let us cleave unto our spouses, weathering the storms through the grace of God and the strength of our commitment to one another and to the holy covenant we have entered into. For in marriage, as in all things, our ultimate allegiance is to the Lord, and it is by His word, His grace, and His strength that we shall overcome.
