In Enugu State, a 70-year-old man is accused of killing a 13-year-old deaf and stupid girl by raping her.
The act allegedly took place at Aborjieze village in Umuagu-Inyi Autonomous Community in Oji River Local Government Area on Saturday, September 23. Anthony Mgbenwa Okpara, a septuagenarian, is accused of abusing Uche, the teenage daughter of Cyril Ajala Onwuzuru, according to a community source.
We were also informed that the young girl passed away immediately after being sexually assaulted by the elderly man.
“The girl’s body is in the mortuary as we speak, and we want this matter to be determined in law of competent jurisdiction to serve as a deterrent to other perpetuators,” he stated.
Sources further said that the suspect was being held at the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters, and that the community was growing concerned that he could try to settle the case by using money.
Under the condition of anonymity, a community leader told reporters that the suspect was accused of abusing a young girl in the past, but the matter was covered up.
He explained: “I mean that she was sexually assaulted to the extent that the child lost her life as soon as the act was completed.
The intrigue in this case is that the young girl’s parents are poor and disadvantaged, and she is a minor who is deaf and dumb, and she died as a result of this crime.
“Now, Mr. Anthony Mgbenwokpara fled as soon as he learned of the girl’s death. But after numerous attempts to convince him, he came and turned himself in to the police.
While in police detention, Mr. Anthony Mgbenwa Okpara and the family were utilizing monetary gifts against the poor parents. We also believe they will treat the Police in the same manner.”
