A Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of a 28-year-old man, Ojo Alofe, at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, over allegations of robbery and attempted murder.
According to the charge, the defendant is accused of committing the offenses on August 22, 2023, at Ijero Ekiti Magisterial District. He is alleged to have robbed a sum of N190,000 from the victim and attempted to murder a 68-year-old man named David Omoleye. These actions are said to be punishable under Sections 312 and 241 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The victim, a welder, stated in his police statement that the defendant threatened to kill him and proceeded to assault him with a large iron rod, causing injuries to various parts of his body. When the victim lost consciousness, the defendant allegedly took N190,000 and the victim’s mobile phone from his pocket. The defendant is also accused of using a cutlass to damage the victim’s welding machine and other equipment.
During the court proceedings, the police prosecutor, Insp. Bankole Olasunkanmi, requested an adjournment to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to issue legal advice, as the original case file had been sent to his office. The prosecutor also urged the court to grant the ex-parte application to remand the defendant.
In her ruling, Magistrate Bunmi Bamidele found reasonable cause to grant the prosecutor’s application. She ordered the defendant’s remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, for a period of 30 days pending the issuance of legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ekiti State Ministry of Justice. The case was adjourned to November 8, 2023, for mention.
