Mayfield Specialist Hospital, located in Suncity Estate, Lokogoma, is now under investigation by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The probe was initiated in response to a tragic vehicular accident that occurred in Abuja on Sunday, July 2, 2023.
The collision involved motorbike riders, including one operating a high-capacity motorbike (power bike), resulting in fatalities and injuries. The injured rider, unfortunately, also passed away later on. Mayfield Specialist Hospital, being nearby, was the appropriate choice for emergency intervention and patient stabilization.
However, the response and actions taken by the hospital have raised concerns from a consumer protection perspective, leading to complaints and engagement with the FCCPC. In an official statement by the commission’s executive vice chairman, Babatunde Irukera, it was emphasized that the investigation aims to address these controversies and aggravations.
The statement clarified that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) promptly responded to the accident and ensured proper management of the scene. As part of their response, the injured rider was transported to Mayfield Specialist Hospital in Suncity Estate, Lokogoma.
Upon gathering substantial information from various sources, including public channels, friends, and family, the FCCPC took swift action by launching an investigation. On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, the commission executed a search of Mayfield Specialist Hospital between 11:19 am and 5:13 pm, in compliance with Section 27(1) and (3) of the Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Act 2018 (FCCPA).
The investigation has clear objectives, including assessing the sufficiency of responses from relevant stakeholders involved in the emergency situation from a consumer protection standpoint. Furthermore, it aims to prevent similar avoidable and undesirable outcomes in the future. The FCCPC will also consider appropriate consequences, if necessary, under the FCCPA.
It’s important to note that the investigation does not involve the evaluation of professional conduct within the licensed professionals involved in the incident’s treatment or management value chain.
The FCCPC has assured the public that further updates regarding the investigation will be provided in the coming days.
