The Federal Capital Territory High Court has issued an order to the Department of State Services (DSS) to bring forward criminal charges against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). In the event that no charges are presented, the court directed that Emefiele should be released on bail within one week.
Presiding Judge Hamza Muazu made the ruling, emphasizing that if Emefiele is not taken to a competent court for prosecution, he should be granted bail.
Emefiele’s suspension by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 resulted in the transfer of his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate. The following day, the DSS declared that Emefiele was in their custody for “investigative reasons.”
In response, Emefiele, through his lawyer Joseph Daudu, filed a lawsuit against the DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), seeking to uphold his fundamental rights.
