Torrential Downpour Claims Seven Lives in South Korea, Unleashing Devastating Floods

South Korea is grappling with severe flooding caused by heavy rains, leading to the loss of seven lives and three individuals reported missing. The downpour has submerged several counties across the country, prompting thousands of residents to be evacuated from their homes due to the overflowing Goesan Dam.

As the rain continues, there are concerns that the death toll may increase further. The central county of Goesan, particularly affected by the overflowing dam, ordered over 6,400 residents to evacuate as a precautionary measure. Tragically, the seven fatalities thus far resulted from rain-triggered landslides and building collapses.

In North Gyeongsang province, two people went missing after being swept away by an overflowing river. Responding to the situation, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has called for preemptive measures to address river overflows and landslides. Additionally, he has requested assistance from the defense ministry to support ongoing rescue operations.

Due to the severe weather conditions, regular train services throughout the country have been suspended, except for the operational KTX bullet trains, which may be subject to schedule adjustments. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working diligently to manage the aftermath of the floods and ensure the safety of affected residents.
