Born in 1953 to parents from Imo State, Chief (Mrs) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu is not just the first lady of Ondo State but a force to be reckoned with. A dedicated aquaculturist and philanthropist, she has made a significant impact on her community and beyond.
Married to the esteemed legal luminary, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, Betty has been a pillar of support for her husband throughout his career. However, she is a formidable individual in her own right, known for her candidness, grace, and unwavering passion for making a difference.
Betty’s journey to philanthropy began when she battled breast cancer and underwent treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. Inspired by her survival story, she founded the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to raise awareness and provide support for breast cancer patients. The project gained prominence even before her husband’s public role.
Her compassion for humanity extends beyond BRECAN. Betty is an advocate for women’s empowerment, especially in the area of education. Since 2017, her BEMORE summer boot camp program has empowered over 1,500 girls from remote communities through training in information technology, skills acquisition, and overall empowerment.
Additionally, she champions the cause of gender inclusivity and women in leadership positions. This led to the establishment of the Foundation for Wives of Ondo State Officials (FOWOSO), a platform that prepares and mobilizes women for leadership roles in a traditionally male-dominated society.
Fondly referred to as ‘Digital Mama,’ Betty’s tech-savviness has enabled her to extend the reach of her women empowerment initiatives. She established a digital platform to register and support widows, empowering them in various ways.
The septuagenarian’s kindness, philanthropy, and charitable deeds have touched many lives, endearing her to people far and wide. Chief (Mrs) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu continues to be an inspiring and impactful figure, leaving a legacy of compassion, strength, and leadership in her wake.
