The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he called on Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential election. In a statement issued by his media team and signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the Sultan described the reports as false, insisting that he could not make such a partisan political statement either publicly or privately because of his role as a father figure to all Nigerians.
The statement stressed that the institutions of monarchy and religion led by the Sultan are expected to remain neutral and serve all Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliations. It explained that the Sultan’s role is to provide fatherly guidance, royal blessings and spiritual counsel to politicians and citizens alike, without endorsing any individual or political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His media team urged Nigerians to disregard the false reports and resist attempts to drag traditional and religious institutions into partisan politics. It also called on journalists and social media users to verify information before publishing or sharing claims capable of misleading the public, reaffirming his commitment to promoting peace, unity, stability and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
