A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has recalled a conversation she had with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, about his promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027. Yesufu said Obi told her that four years would be enough to put the necessary structures in place and begin transforming Nigeria.

According to Aisha Yesufu , she directly questioned Obi about why he would voluntarily limit himself to one term when the Constitution allows a president to seek re-election. She said Obi maintained that “only one term, one time is enough to put things in place,” adding that he had held the same position for years.

Yesufu said Obi’s consistent position convinced her that the one-term promise was not merely a campaign strategy to win votes. She noted that he had expressed the same intention before the 2023 presidential election, stressing that political leaders should keep promises made to Nigerians, particularly when they involve the exercise of political power.
