The Super Falcons have successfully qualified for the round of 16 in the ongoing Women’s World Cup (WWC). The crucial goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland at the Suncorp Stadium in Milton, Australia, on Monday secured their progress to the knockout stage.
With four points from their previous two games, Nigeria only needed to avoid defeat against Ireland to advance to the next round. Ireland’s elimination from the competition was confirmed after their 2-1 loss to Canada in their previous match.
Asisat Oshoala returned to the starting line-up, leading the Falcons’ attack instead of Ifeoma Onumonu. In the early stages of the game, Ireland dominated the encounter.
In the fifth minute, Ireland had the first attempt at goal when Sinead Farrelly cut the ball back to Katie McCabe at the edge of the Nigerian goal area, but the Ireland skipper’s left-footed shot went just wide of the post.
Ten minutes later, the Falcons came close to taking the lead, but Oshoala’s effort went wide. After the halftime break, they had their most significant chance when Uchenna Kanu’s header hit the underside of the crossbar, with Ireland’s goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan saving it.
The Falcons maintained their resilience and held on to the goalless draw, securing their spot in the round of 16. They finished second in the group, behind Australia, who defeated Canada 4-0 in the group game.
Next, the Super Falcons are set to face the winner of Group D, which includes England, Denmark, China, and Haiti, in a match scheduled for August 7.
