On Monday, Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court sentenced three youths to five years in prison each for conspiring and gang raping one of their cousins.
The court found them guilty on two counts of criminal conspiracy and rape in the Adangba district of Ilorin.
The defendant (Omotosho Yahaya, 23, the victim’s cousin) was alleged to have invited his two companions, Mustapha Ahmed (23) and Mustapha Ridwan (22), both students at a tertiary institution, to assist him in the crime while the victim was in her room.
They were each sentenced to five years in prison for rape and two years for criminal conspiracy, along with a N50,000 fine.
According to Justice Akinpelu, “the confessional statements of the defendants are clear, unambiguous, and equivocal, contrary to their counsel’s argument.”
