“Lagos State Government Takes Swift Action After Tragic Elevator Accident”

In the aftermath of the tragic elevator accident at Lagos Island General Hospital that claimed the life of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, the Lagos State government has swiftly responded to the incident. The government has taken significant steps based on the recommendations of an investigative panel set up to determine the causes of the accident, identify those responsible, and suggest preventive measures for the future.

The following actions have been implemented by the government:

Facility Management: The facility managers in charge of the hospital have been terminated and blacklisted due to their involvement.

Suspension: The General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) has been suspended immediately.

Police Investigation: The installation and maintenance contractors have been handed over to the police for further investigation, with possible prosecution if found culpable.

Restructuring: The operations and reporting structure of the facility managers have been restructured to involve direct hospital management oversight.

Elevator Examination: Engineers are investigating why the elevator’s safety devices failed simultaneously.

Insurance Coverage: All staff members are fully insured, and the incident has been reported to life insurance providers.

Elevator Audit: The Lagos Safety Commission will conduct an audit of all elevators in public offices, in addition to existing safety measures.

The government expressed condolences to the family of Dr. Vwaere Diaso and acknowledged the need for functional and secure accommodation for healthcare workers. The measures taken reflect the commitment to transparency, accountability, and ensuring the safety of both staff and patients.
