The Federal High Court in Lagos has set August 15th as the date to hear an application by the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele. He is seeking to halt his trial by the Federal Government through the Department of State Services (DSS).
Additionally, the court will also hear an application by the DSS seeking to appeal the N20 million bail granted to Emefiele by the court.
Emefiele’s legal team has argued that the DSS cannot continue to prosecute him while the agency has refused to obey the court order admitting him to bail. His lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), stated that the DSS’s actions are in contempt of the court’s proceedings.
Emefiele is facing illegal firearms charges filed against him by the DSS. His legal team is seeking to have the charges quashed and for him to be released from DSS detention.
The court’s decision to fix the date for the hearing comes after the defence requested time to reply to the prosecution’s further counter-affidavit, which was served on them just before the proceedings began
