“Release Kanu per Court Order, ASITU Urges Tinubu”

As the South East governors and other Igbo leaders prepare to visit the Aso Rock Villa to discuss the security situation in the zone, Chief Emeka Diwe, the National President of the Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU), has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Nnamdi Kanu’s case is expected to be a key topic of discussion during the upcoming meeting between South East governors, Igbo stakeholders, and the Presidency. Diwe believes that Kanu’s release is long overdue and should be based on judicial merit rather than political clemency.

Diwe highlighted that a court had previously ordered Kanu’s release, a decision that was not acted upon by the previous administration. He suggested that if Tinubu releases Kanu, it would demonstrate a commitment to democratic principles and judicial obedience rather than political favor.

Diwe argued that other Nigerians from different tribes who committed crimes have been released due to political considerations, while Kanu’s continued detention is a reflection of bias against the Igbo people.

The South East Governors’ Forum recently seemed to absolve Nnamdi Kanu of responsibility for the insecurity in the region.
