Two labor leaders have emphasized the need for the incoming Minister of Labour to demonstrate empathy towards workers, especially given the challenging economic circumstances. The leaders provided their insights separately to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, ahead of the inauguration of new ministers by President Bola Tinubu.
Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Lagos Chapter, expressed confidence in Mr. Simon Lalong, the designated Minister of Labour and Employment, citing his prior experience as a former governor of Plateau State. Sessi believed that Lalong’s positive track record with labor unions in his state could be extended to the national level, benefiting workers across sectors, both public and private. Sessi highlighted the importance of fair wealth distribution and the role of a compassionate and experienced minister in achieving this goal.
Mr. Aladetan Abiodun, Secretary of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria in Lagos State Council, underscored the challenges the new Minister for Labour would face due to the removal of fuel subsidies, impacting fixed-income earners. Abiodun stressed the need for immediate action to prevent a potential industrial crisis and urged quick resolution of issues such as the new minimum wage. He also called for improved labor inspections and enforcement of labor laws, particularly concerning foreign companies’ compliance.
In conclusion, the labor leaders advocated for an empathetic and experienced minister who can address the challenges faced by workers, tackle pressing issues, and ensure fair treatment under the law.
