What Causes White Discharge During or After Sex?

White discharge is a fluid that comes out from the vagina or penis during and after sex. There are different reasons for this discharge, and some are normal, while others might indicate an infection.

During Sexual Intercourse:

  1. Sexual Arousal: When sexually aroused, the vagina produces a clear or milky white discharge that helps with lubrication and protection.
  2. Menstrual Cycle Changes: Different stages of the menstrual cycle lead to varying types of discharge. At the beginning and end of the period, it might be thicker and white. During ovulation, it’s clearer and stretchy.

After Sexual Intercourse:

  1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): BV is an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria, causing off-white or gray discharge with a fishy odor. It can lead to itchiness and discomfort.
  2. Yeast Infection: An overgrowth of vaginal fungus results in thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge, along with itching and redness.
  3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections like chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea can cause white discharge along with symptoms like itching, burning, and pain.

For Penises:

  1. Sexual Arousal: A milky white fluid called pre-ejaculate or “pre-come” is normal during arousal, and white semen is released during ejaculation.
  2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): UTIs in the urethra can cause penile discharge, often accompanied by pain or discomfort during urination.
  3. Yeast Infection: Men can get penile yeast infections after sex, causing white discharge, itching, and redness.
  4. STIs: Infections like chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea can cause white discharge, pain, and irritation.

When to Seek Help:

  • If the discharge smells different or looks unusual.
  • If you experience pain during sex or urination.
  • If you have abdominal or pelvic pain, itching, burning, rash, or sores.

Remember, some discharge during sex is normal due to arousal and lubrication. But if you’re concerned about changes in discharge or accompanying symptoms, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor.
