Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, has announced the revival of monthly sanitation in Abuja to maintain the city’s cleanliness. After a meeting with project contractors, Wike disclosed that two Saturdays a month would be dedicated to sanitation efforts from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. He emphasized the importance of cooperation from all residents, as companies supporting the FCT with logistics could remove refuse from public places and markets.
Wike highlighted the necessity of sacrifices for a cleaner environment and urged residents to spare three hours on Saturdays to clear refuse for proper disposal. He also addressed the issue of streetlights, indicating ongoing improvements, and assured that the entire city would be illuminated.
Regarding deviations from the Abuja Master Plan, Wike pledged to rectify the situation, particularly with regards to parks and green spaces. He expressed concern about undeveloped plots of land becoming havens for criminals and emphasized the administration’s commitment to creating a secure environment.
The minister stated that satellite towns would receive attention, starting with assessments to determine their needs and prioritize improvements. He acknowledged limited funding but stressed the importance of responsible spending. Wike noted the discrepancy between the N15 billion approved in the 2022 national budget and the substantial value of contracts awarded, calling for prioritization.
In conclusion, Wike urged stakeholder collaboration to enhance Abuja’s safety and aesthetics while acknowledging that challenges would be addressed incrementally based on available funds.
