“State NLC and TUC Unite, Order Workers to Strike”

As the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) announced a two-day warning strike, several state chapters of the organized labor union have declared their readiness to join the industrial action. The nationwide strike, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 5 and 6, 2023, has garnered support from various state chapters, according to statements from their leadership.

Chairwoman of the NLC Lagos chapter, Mrs. Agnes Sessi, confirmed their participation in the nationwide strike, stating that they are bound by decisions made at the national level. She emphasized their commitment to the strike called by the national leadership.

In Sokoto State, the NLC chairman, Abdullahi Jungle, announced that they were actively mobilizing members to participate in the two-day warning strike. The council had convened a meeting to finalize the modalities for their involvement.

Kano State’s NLC chapter, under the leadership of Kabiru Inuwa, also pledged support for the national strike, emphasizing that their decision was made during a National Executive Council meeting in Abuja. They were set to hold a State Executive Council meeting to formalize their strike preparations.

The Ekiti State chapter of the NLC conveyed that their members would join the strike if the Federal Government did not address their demands. Chairman Kolapo Olatunde stressed that they had received communication from the national body regarding the strike and would mobilize their members accordingly.

In Gombe State, General Secretary Ibrahim Fika noted that they had received notice of the strike and would join the action after their State Executive Council meeting. Fika emphasized the nationwide nature of the strike and the mobilization efforts of the union headquarters.

In Niger State, the NLC held a crucial meeting with its affiliate bodies, including teachers’ unions, medical and health workers, hotel workers, and civil service unions. The State Council’s secretary, Mohammed Salihu, confirmed that a press conference would be held to present the strike’s modalities.

Bauchi State’s NLC chapter stated its readiness to join the strike, with Chairman Shu’aibu Dauda mentioning that it was a directive from the national secretariat, obligating them to participate in the nationwide action.

The NLC’s warning strike has gained substantial support from state chapters, reflecting a united front in their push for the fulfillment of their demands. The strike is poised to impact various sectors of the economy and draw attention to labor-related issues on a national scale.
