[BREAKING] Mohbad: Teargas Used to Disperse Sympathizers at Lekki Tollgate

Protesters and fans of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, faced alleged teargas dispersal on Thursday night at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State. The demonstrators had gathered for a candlelight procession to honor the late artist.

The protest had been announced earlier in the week via the official X handle of the deceased’s management. They expressed gratitude for the love shown by fans worldwide and those organizing events to pay tribute to Mohbad. The procession and tribute concert were organized as a way to celebrate his legacy.

During the event, participants donned white T-shirts and joyfully danced to the late artist’s songs as a final act of respect and tribute to his memory.

However, a video shared by a popular skit maker, Oluwadolaz, included claims that the gathering had been dispersed with teargas. Some individuals suggested that the teargas canisters were fired by police officers in the state. An Instagram live video by actress Iyabo Ojo also showed one attendee expressing confusion about the source of the teargas and acknowledged the presence of police officers securing the event.

Adding to the confusion, On-Air Personality Do2dtun clarified on his X handle that the gathering was not a protest but a candlelight procession. He mentioned that the procession had concluded hours earlier at Muri Okunola Park but some people had converged at the Lekki Tollgate.

The candlelight procession, which began at 5 pm, was organized by the management of the late singer. A tribute concert followed at 8 pm at Muri Okunola Park.

Efforts to contact the police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages at the time of this report.
