Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has criticized the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for his approach in approving the passage of certain executive bills without involving other members of the Senate.
During a session that took place on Thursday, Senator Ndume voiced his concerns, highlighting the lack of formal reading and member contributions for some bills that were passed under Akpabio’s leadership.
The Senator from Borno South was not alone in his disapproval. Senator Ogoshi Onawo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party representing Nasarawa State, also expressed his criticism of Akpabio’s haste in pushing certain bills through.
He raised concerns about the rapid pace at which “very sensitive bills” were being brought and passed, emphasizing that such a practice was not in the best interest of the country. Onawo underlined the importance of senators being well-informed, conducting research, and making constructive contributions. He further pointed out that even money bills were being presented and expected to be passed within a mere two hours, which he deemed detrimental to the country.
In response to Senator Onawo’s comments, Senate President Akpabio defended his actions, stating that if the bills passed by the Senate were ultimately beneficial for the country, history would vindicate his decisions. He asserted that the Senate would not pass bills that did not serve the interests of Nigerians and noted Senator Onawo’s concerns for the record.
