Rivers Police Detain Suspected Trafficker, Safely Recover Newborns

Along the Rumuikini-Choba axis of the East-West Road in the state’s Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the Rivers State Police Command apprehended Peace Effiong, a suspected child trafficker, together with two newborn twins.

The anti-cultism team of the command stopped a Toyota Sienna carrying people who were acting suspiciously in the area, according to State Commissioner of Police Emeke Nwonyi, who made the announcement in Port Harcourt on Friday.

On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the Anti-Cultism Unit’s operations carried out a crucial operation, according to Nwonyi. In Port Harcourt, they were conducting a thorough check along Rumuekini-Choba, East-West Road when they came across a Toyota Sienna carrying people who were acting suspiciously.

“After searching, we found twin infants, a male and a female, both around two days old, with a man named Peace Effiong. Effiong, however, was unable to adequately explain the babies’ lineage. One of the babies was left behind when her claimed husband, an unidentified man, disappeared.

“Effiong said that a buddy in Lagos had set him up to buy these newborn children in Port Harcourt for N2.8 million. We have opened an investigation to find other potential culprits.

When his men raided a criminal hideout in Port Harcourt, the CP added that five suspected armed robbers were apprehended along the D/Line axis. He noted that as his men approached the Aba Road end leading to D/Line, the suspects were intercepted while others fled, abandoning a revolver pistol with three loaded rounds.

“Operators from the Olu-Obasanjo division raided a criminal hideaway on the D/Line, CFC bus stop axis on December 10, 2023, at around 23:00 hours.

“While reaching Aba Road, I was able to stop five individuals, while others fled and dropped a revolver weapon with three loaded rounds. The suspects are being questioned, and an investigation is proceeding in the meanwhile,” he continued.
