University of Ilorin Student Commits Suicide After Lending Money on Social Media

A 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Sanni Hameedat, allegedly committed suicide after lending a boy she met on Snapchat the sum of N500,000. Hameedat, who was undergoing her SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) program at the time, was said to have lent the money to the boy who claimed his mother needed it for breast cancer treatment.

However, the boy disappeared after receiving the money, and Hameedat was unable to repay her mother, which led to financial pressure. She borrowed N450,000 from loan apps and added her savings of N50,000 to make up the N500,000.

Distressed by the situation, Hameedat reportedly ingested a bottle of pesticide known as Sniper and was found in distress by her roommate, who rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared dead.

The hostel management where she resided issued a statement confirming the circumstances leading to her suicide. The incident has sparked an investigation by the university.

This tragic incident highlights the potential dangers of online interactions and the importance of financial responsibility, especially when dealing with strangers on social media platforms.
