The Jigawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended Saleh Idris, the party’s chairman in Roni Local Government Area, over allegations of raping and impregnating his 14-year-old housemaid. This decision follows Idris’ arrest and subsequent court proceedings related to the alleged crime.
A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Dutse had remanded Saleh Idris in connection with the allegations, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had also conducted a laboratory test, confirming the minor’s pregnancy.
The APC’s statement noted that Saleh Idris’ actions contravened the party’s constitution and required further investigation. As a result, he was suspended from the chairmanship of the party in Roni Local Government Area pending the final report of the investigation. The party instructed him to hand over the affairs of the party to the local government area’s vice chairman.
These actions underscore the significance of addressing issues of alleged sexual misconduct and abuse, emphasizing that due process and accountability are essential in such cases.
