Political Heavyweights and Military Veterans in Fierce Competition for Ambassadorial Roles

Amidst the recent recall of Nigerian envoys from their posts, a heated race has ensued as state governors, former ministers, retired military officers, and political allies of President Bola Tinubu vie for ambassadorial nominations. The lobbying frenzy has reached the corridors of power, with influential figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), National Assembly members, and retired military personnel seeking coveted positions in the nation’s 109 missions, 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates abroad.

The diplomatic reshuffle began following the Federal Government’s directive on September 2, 2023, recalling all envoys who were mandated to return by October 31, 2023. This development comes after the approval of 46 non-career ambassadors-designate by former President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2016, alongside 47 career ambassadors-designate.

Clarifying the recall, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, stated that only 25 career ambassadors, reaching retirement age or completing 35 years of public service, were affected. Despite the initial controversy, the lobbying for ambassadorial roles has intensified, with political figures bombarding President Bola Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila with nomination requests.

Insiders report that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations are facing substantial pressure from various quarters. The lobbying efforts encompass a broad spectrum, including state governors, National Assembly members, APC support groups, party chieftains, retired military officers, and individuals with previous service in Buhari’s administration.

As the race for ambassadorial positions unfolds, speculation arises regarding the potential ratio of career and non-career diplomats, with sources suggesting a split of 55% to 45%. Meanwhile, most of the recalled ambassadors have returned to the country, and the Presidency is reportedly in the process of compiling the list of new ambassadors.

However, concerns have been raised by experts, such as Prof Bola Akinterinwa, who cautions against appointing ambassadors based on political patronage. Akinterinwa advises President Tinubu to prioritize academic ambassadors with expertise in international affairs to ensure a focus on national interests rather than personal agendas.

In the coming weeks, all eyes will be on the official announcement of ambassadorial appointments, as political dynamics continue to shape the landscape with lobbying intrigues.
