Lagos BRT Commuters Demand Action Amid Bus Shortages

LAGOS, November 20, 2023 – Users of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Lagos are expressing discontent over the shortage of buses and the daily struggles with long queues, urging the government to address the issue promptly.

Speaking with Findwhosabi Metro on Monday, some commuters highlighted the surge in BRT usage, attributing it to the escalating transportation costs in the state. They emphasized that the BRT fares remained relatively lower than those of commercial buses, contributing to an overwhelming demand that often results in seemingly endless queues.

Previously reported by Findwhosabi Metro, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced a 25% fare reduction, following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive, starting from November 7, 2023. In response to appeals from commuters, the governor extended the discount across regulated bus and rail transport services until a further review is conducted.

In an interview with Findwhosabi Metro, a commuter named Saheed urged the government to increase the number of BRT buses in the state, citing the challenges posed by rising transport fares on commercial buses.

Saheed stated, “The Lagos State Government has actually tried for us in this state but they can do better. A lot of people now use the BRT buses in Lagos. We all know what is going on concerning the increase in the price of fuel and transport, and all these yellow buses do not make it easier. A lot of us now know the value of the BRT but the queue sometimes is unbearable, especially when the sun is hot and during rainy seasons.”

Tobi Ayeni, another commuter, suggested that an ample supply of BRT buses would force commercial drivers to reconsider and reduce their transport fares.

“If we have enough BRT buses, I strongly believe all these yellow buses will adjust because they will begin to lose customers and they will have no other option than to at least reduce the cost of their fare that will be slightly comfortable for their passengers,” Ayeni commented.

Despite attempts to reach out to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Wale Musa, he was unavailable for comment as calls and texts to his mobile phone went unanswered at the time of filing this report. Commuters are anxiously awaiting further actions from the government to alleviate the strain on the BRT system and improve the commuting experience for all.
