Ade Olowopopo, a father, has brought his two kids, Kunle and Mayowa, to court on charges of robbery and abusing their sister, Bisi Olowopopo, at Lakwe Lekki, Lagos State.
The Olowopopos were charged with five charges relating to breach of peace, assault, breaking and entering, stealing, and endangering life on Monday before Magistrate O. M. Ajayi in an Ebute Metta Magistrate’s Court.
Paul Ugorji, the prosecutor, told the court that the offenders had committed the offense at some point in 2019, when the complainant was traveling abroad.
According to him, the defendants broke into their father’s compound, beat up their older sister, and drove her out. They then took a block molding machine and a N7 million Toyota 4Runner Jeep without getting his permission.
A family dispute has developed from information presented in court that the sons belonged to Olowopopo’s second wife, with whom he has a disagreement, particularly on the boys’ paternity.
Ugorji claimed that the offenses committed violated and were against Sections 411, 172, 287, 56, and 168(d) of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Laws.
The charges stated in part, “That at some point in 2019 in Lakwe Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, you, Adekunle Olowopopo, 35, and Mayowa Olowopopo, 33, did conspire together to commit felony to wit assault, stealing, breaking and entering, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015 Criminal Laws.”
That you, Adekunle Olowopopo “m” and Mayowa Olowopopo, assaulted one Adebisi Olowopopo, your elder sister, at some point in 2019 by beating her with fist blows and forcing her from the compound, in violation of Section 172 of the Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015 Criminal Laws.
The defendants, however, entered a guilty plea to the charges. The magistrate, Ajayi, admitted them to bail in the amount of N40,000 with one responsible surety. She advised the family to go settle the case and make peace. The case was postponed until December 12, 2023. “That you, Adekunle Olowopopo and Mayowa Olowopopo, sometime in 2019, on the above date, time, and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did steal a Toyota 4 Runner Jeep and a block moulding machine, properties of Adeleke Olowopopo and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria, 2015.”
