Nigerian Environment Minister Optimistic on Climate Change Fight

The Minister of Environment in Nigeria, Abass Balarabe, has expressed optimism about finding solutions to the negative effects of climate change. Speaking at the 9th Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall in Abuja, Balarabe highlighted the importance of combating climate change and creating a healthier and greener environment for communities to thrive.

Balarabe stated, “I am optimistic that the deliberations of this 9th session would provide meaningful solutions for combating the negative effects of climate change and provide an avenue to attain a healthier and greener environment for our communities to thrive.”

He mentioned that Nigeria, as a member state, has implemented more recommendations of the Council after the 8th session, emphasizing the commitment to sustainable practices. The 8th session commenced with a tree planting exercise, which has been maintained and sustained.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, emphasized the significance of commitment and collaboration in addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of the Great Green Wall initiative in combating desertification, land degradation, and climate change.

Salako stated, “Today’s gathering is a testament to our collective commitment to addressing the environmental challenges that affect the lives of millions across Africa and indeed the world.”

A representative of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Ms. Louisa Baker, assured the agency of support in combating desertification in Nigeria. Baker called for the involvement of the private sector in the Great Green Wall initiative.

The event also saw the launch of the Green Women Platform by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by the Vice-President’s wife, Nana Shettima. The Green Women Platform aims to empower women in environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
