Apple Music has recently unveiled its year-end streaming figures for 2023, highlighting the sustained dominance of Nigeria’s Afrobeats, particularly evident in Ghana.
According to the charts released on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, all of the top 10 songs streamed by Ghanaians over the past 12 months were Nigerian hits. The data encompasses plays from November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023.
Topping the Ghanaian chart was Asake’s “Lonely At The Top,” followed by “Soweto” by Victony and Tempoe, and “Xtra Cool” by Young Jonn.
Ruger’s “Asiwaju” secured the fourth position, with Omah Lay’s “soso” taking the fifth spot. Ayra Starr’s “Rush” claimed the sixth position, while Fireboy DML and Asake’s “Bandana” landed in seventh.
Davido’s Grammy-nominated track “UNAVAILABLE” occupied the eighth spot, and Burna Boy’s massive hit “Last Last,” along with Asake’s “Terminator,” rounded off the top 10, solidifying a Nigerian sweep in Ghana.
The impact of Afrobeats transcended Ghana and extended to Kenya, where the top 10 chart was similarly dominated by Afrobeats songs. Notable entries included “Soweto,” “Rush,” “Last Last,” “soso,” “Bandana,” and “Asiwaju” occupying the top six positions.
On the Kenyan chart, the remaining four songs included “Ta Ta Ta” by Bayanni, “KU LO SA” by Oxlade and Camila Cabello, “Charm” by Rema, and “People” by Libianca.
Globally, the remix of Rema’s hit single “Calm Down,” featuring Selena Gomez, secured the 12th spot as the most streamed song, marking the highest entry ever for an African song.
