On Wednesday, unrest unfolded in Kurna Quarters along Katsina Road in Kano as youths took to the streets to protest the killing of a teenager by police personnel. The incident, which occurred in the wake of clashes between political thugs, escalated tensions in the area.
Early on Wednesday, political thugs reportedly clashed, disturbing the peace in the neighborhood. Allegedly, police personnel dispatched to the scene resorted to indiscriminate shooting and deployed teargas canisters to disperse the thugs. Unfortunately, one person, a teenager unrelated to the warring factions, lost their life as a result.
The killing incited local youth to organize a protest. In response, the demonstrators blocked the busy Kano-Katsina-Daura highway for an extended period, causing inconvenience for commuters and motorists trapped in the tumultuous area.
Confirming the situation, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahai Haruna, acknowledged the incident and stated that the command had issued a statement addressing the matter. He further revealed that the officer responsible for the fatal shots had been arrested.
The Commissioner of Police has taken action by ordering the arrest of the inspector involved and establishing a board of inquiry led by Area Commander Dala to conduct a preliminary investigation. The police assured the public that justice would be served in connection with the incident.
