D’banj Cleared of Rape and Fraud Allegations: Official Statements

Nigerian singer Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj, has been officially exonerated of rape and N-Power fraud accusations by the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

As reported by Punch Newspapers, D’banj has been cleared of all charges following thorough investigations by both authorities. An affidavit submitted by Abuja-based lawyer Toheeb Lawal to the District Court of Abuja, citing the Nigeria Police Force’s investigation reports and the ICPC’s clearance marked exhibits A and B, served as vindication for D’banj.

The affidavit stated, “The allegation was investigated, and there is no medical report on the victim to ascertain that she was raped. There are no adduced facts or corroborative evidence to substantiate the allegation of rape against the suspect. Prima facie offences of indecent assault, rape, and intimidation are not made out.”

Moreover, the complainant voluntarily withdrew the petition and discontinued the investigation through a letter submitted by her counsel, Ojoge, Omileye & Partners, dated July 17, 2020, to the DIG Force CID.

D’banj faced serious public scrutiny and reputation damage when accused of rape by Seyitan Babatayo, who alleged that the incident occurred at the Glee Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, in 2018. The singer maintained his innocence, publicly addressing the matter and subsequently suing Babatayo for ₦100 million in compensation.

In a statement posted on June 16, 2020, D’banj expressed his frustration and clarified his stance, stating, “Accusations are false and ludicrous and have been handed over to my legal team, while the Nigerian Police are investigating the criminal aspect of it.”

Following the official investigations, D’banj is now free of all allegations related to the matter.
