Troops of Operation Desert Sanity in Maiduguri, Borno State, have apprehended three soldiers suspected of stealing ammunition. The arrests were made during a covert operation at motor parks along Njimtilo Road in Maiduguri.
According to a military source, two of the soldiers were traveling to Markudi, while one was headed to Abuja. During the operation, one of the soldiers was found to have concealed ammunition in a bag of rice.
Details of the ammunition recovered include:
- One soldier en route to Makurdi was arrested with 250 rounds of 7.62 MM ammunition.
- Another soldier heading to Makurdi was apprehended with four fully-loaded magazines and 110 rounds concealed in a mudu of rice.
- The third soldier, traveling to Abuja, was arrested with 14 rounds of 7.62MM ammunition.
The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation. As of the time of reporting, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, could not be reached for comment. The military authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged theft of ammunition by the arrested soldiers.
