In a heart-wrenching incident, 26-year-old Femi Adegboyega and his 23-year-old sister, Ibukun Adegboyega, lost their lives in a drowning tragedy while swimming at Ibeshe Beach in the Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State. The unfortunate incident occurred on Christmas Day at approximately 6:00 pm, leaving the community in shock.
The victims, residents of FESTAC Town, were reportedly enjoying an outing with friends when the incident unfolded. Witnesses revealed that the siblings were swimming alongside their friends before the sudden and tragic disaster struck.
An eyewitness, Seun, who had been with them moments before the incident, expressed bewilderment at the sudden turn of events. He shared, “We were swimming together on the beach. To be honest, I do not understand how it happened because we were together, and all of a sudden they both drowned. I wonder how their parents will feel now because they are brothers, and I also feel terrible because we could not help.”
Despite the efforts of friends and local divers at the beach to rescue the siblings, their attempts proved futile. Femi, another eyewitness, recounted, “All efforts by his friends and local divers to rescue them from Ibeshe Beach did not work. The divers searched the beach but their bodies have not been found. We swam for a long time but to no avail. I strongly believe their bodies will be found soon. We informed the police about it quickly before the situation escalated. I pray their bodies will be found. I pray everything works well.”
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the tragic incident. He revealed that divers had been engaged to search for the bodies, and an ongoing investigation was in progress. The family of the deceased had been notified of the unfortunate event.
As the community grapples with the loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of safety measures during recreational activities, especially near water bodies.
