The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has expressed concern about the nation’s electoral integrity, emphasizing that elections should be decided at polling units rather than in courtrooms. Speaking during remarks at the House’s vacation for the New Year holidays, Abbas called for electoral reforms to strengthen democratic institutions.
Abbas commended his colleagues for their dedication since the inauguration of the federal parliament on June 13, 2023. He urged a minute’s silence to honor members of the 10th House who lost their lives, including Abdulkadir Danbuga and the late member-elect Ismaila Maihanci.

Addressing the importance of electoral reforms, Abbas stated, “The over-judicialization of electoral outcomes has greatly undermined public confidence and could erode the legitimacy of political leadership if not quickly and adequately addressed.”
Highlighting the achievements of the House, Abbas mentioned the review and update of Standing Orders to adapt to changing societal and legislative needs. The speaker also noted the allocation of resources to various committees, the passing of key bills, and the engagement of citizens in legislative processes.
Abbas outlined the House’s legislative agenda, emphasizing eight priority areas, including good governance, national security, economic growth, social sector reform, and addressing climate change.
The speaker further disclosed that the House received and considered 962 bills, 500 motions, and 153 petitions, with notable bills passed, including the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2023.

The Speaker underscored the importance of motions as potent tools of legislative representation, addressing various issues such as oil theft, student loans, job racketeering, and the petroleum subsidy regime. He highlighted the House’s efforts in fostering greater collaboration with citizens, ensuring their voices are heard in the legislative process.
In concluding the speaker remarks, Abbas expressed optimism in the House’s commitment to empowering citizens, promoting economic growth, and enhancing peace and security through legislative actions.
