Ismaila Sarr initiated the scoring in the 16th minute, seizing on a rebound from a corner after Cameroon’s goalkeeper Andre Onana’s clearing punch. Midway through the second half, Habib Diallo extended Senegal’s lead with a well-timed goal. Cameroon managed to narrow the deficit when Jean-Charles Castelletto headed in a late goal, setting the stage for an intense finale.
Cameroon, lacking a consistent attacking threat throughout the match due to the absence of key striker Vincent Aboubakar, pressed forward in the final minutes. Despite their efforts, George-Kevin Nkoudou missed a crucial header that could have equalized the score.
Senegal capitalized on the opportunity, with Sadio Mane sealing the victory in stoppage time. Mane, the former Liverpool forward, calmly slotted the ball into the net after receiving a pass from Idrissa Gana Gueye.
The win positions Senegal at the top of Group C, and they will secure the group’s leadership if they avoid defeat in their final group fixture against Guinea.
Guinea, following their 1-0 win against The Gambia, occupies the second spot in the table. On the other hand, Cameroon faces a decisive match against The Gambia, where they must secure a victory to enhance their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
Senegal, led by coach Aliou Cisse, is pursuing a successful defense of their AFCON title. The Teranga Lions, champions two years ago, have commenced their title defense in stellar fashion and aspire to become the first team to retain the trophy since Egypt achieved this feat in 2010.
