Salah’s Injury Worsens: Liverpool’s Concern

Liverpool expresses heightened concern as Mohamed Salah’s leg injury worsens during the Africa Cup of Nations, impacting both club and country.

Liverpool has provided an update on Mohamed Salah’s leg injury suffered during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), indicating that the situation is “worse than first feared.” Despite the setback, Egypt is hopeful that Salah can make a return for a potential semi-final, showcasing his importance to both club and country.

The injury occurred during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in Group B. Despite Salah’s absence, Egypt secured a spot in the knockout stage with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Cape Verde. Liverpool announced that Salah would undergo an “intensive rehabilitation program” upon his return to the club.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledged the significance of Salah doing his rehab with the club, emphasizing the collaborative effort to ensure his return to action. The Egyptian football association initially stated that Salah would only feature in the tournament again if Egypt advanced to the quarter-finals on 2 or 3 February.

Klopp added that if Egypt qualifies for the final and Salah is fit before then, he might participate. However, Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, conveyed a more cautious outlook, mentioning a 21-28 day recovery period and the possibility of Salah rejoining the team after intensive rehabilitation in the UK.

The severity of Salah’s hamstring problem was highlighted by Klopp, who noted the rarity of Salah leaving the field due to injury. The uncertainty surrounding Salah’s return raises questions about his availability for the latter stages of the AFCON.

Despite the challenges, Salah remains determined to win the AFCON, expressing his belief that it will happen sooner or later. He sees winning the Africa Cup as the only major title that has eluded him so far in his illustrious career. The last of Egypt’s seven AFCON titles came in 2010, and Salah aims to contribute to their success, even if his immediate participation remains uncertain.
