Dangote Cement for Economic Diversification

In a recent commendation, the Federal Government has lauded the Dangote Group for its significant contributions to diversifying Nigeria’s economy and its commitment to upholding best practices in all operational facets. The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, expressed these accolades during a familiarization visit to the Dangote Cement plant located in Ibese, Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria, reported Findwhosabi News.

Dr. Salako highlighted the Dangote Cement plant’s pivotal role in the economic landscape, acknowledging it as the continent’s second-largest cement facility in Ogun State, a key driver of the state’s economy. The visit included a community engagement session in preparation for the Expert Panel Review of an Environmental Impact Assessment on coal milling at the plant.

The Minister emphasized the importance of the mining sector in President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s strategy for economic diversification, steering away from dependence on oil and gas. He praised the Cement for its substantial contribution to job creation, export opportunities, and particularly, limestone mining, a crucial raw material in cement manufacturing.

Addressing the challenges associated with mining activities, Dr. Salako commended Dangote Cement for adhering to best practices and integrating high-tech automation in its operations. He stressed the need for sustainable mining practices to prevent adverse environmental effects.

The Minister’s visit was closely tied to the ongoing Environmental Impact Assessment of the plant’s coal mill. Dr. Salako commended the Cement for its proactive approach, noting the company’s leading role in promoting best practices.

Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, who represented Governor Dapo Abiodun, acknowledged the Cement’s positive impact on the state’s economy through levies and taxes. He called for increased collaboration between state agencies and the company, expressing the state’s readiness to support Dangote Cement in various capacities.

Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin provided insights into the social investments and infrastructural milestones achieved by the Dangote Cement Ibese Plant. He emphasized the company’s contributions to economic diversification, job creation, and its role in exporting cement and clinker to neighboring countries, bolstering foreign exchange inflows. The community engagement following the Minister’s tour saw community leaders expressing gratitude for Dangote Cement’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

The Olu of Imasayi, Oba Kuoye Olalekan, a prominent monarch in Yewaland, lauded Dangote Cement as the “transformer and illumination of Yewaland,” recognizing the company’s developmental strides in the region.
