Voting was halted on Saturday in the Akoko North-East and Akoko North-West Federal Constituency by-elections at Unit 5, Ward 13 in Oyinmo, Ikare-Akoko, ondo sate after suspected political thugs stole the ballot box.
Eyewitnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the hoodlums’ attack generated fear, and many voters fled.
An eyewitness, who did not want his identity published, stated that the incident occurred just before noon, after at least 63 individuals had cast their votes.
According to the eyewitness, the hoodlums took the vote box but not the result sheet, BVAS machine, or other documents.
According to NAN, 407 voters were registered at the polling unit for the election.
Meanwhile, INEC has praised voter participation in the Akoko North-East and Akoko North-West Federal Constituency by-elections in Ondo State.
Prof. Kunle Ajayi, National Commissioner supervising Osun, Ogun, and Ondo States, made the praise in an interview with reporters at Okeagbe in Akoko North-West LGA after observing the election.
“From what we’ve seen since the morning, the election is proceeding calmly, and the turnout is excellent; no violence, no vote-buying anywhere.
“So, we have not recorded any terrible incident since the start of the election, and by grace of God, everything will end peacefully.” “Everywhere we have been, there was no report of challenges with the BVAS machine or cases of it malfunctioning,” he stated.
Commenting on the vote box theft event at Unit 5, Ward 13, Oyinmo, Ikare-Akoko, the national commissioner stated that the situation has been restored to normal.
“It is typical for miscreants to stay miscreants; they attempted to disrupt the voting there, but the police overpowered them, and we restored order; there was no other incident aside from that.
