Two suspected fake herbalists are being held by Edo State Police Command agents after they allegedly tricked two women out of N876,000 by pretending to offer spiritual remedies for their marital and business problems.
According to reports, on Wednesday in Benin City, Lukman Ganiyu, 28, and Ojo Oluwaseun, 38, who are accused of being bogus herbalists, were paraded.
Police Public Relations Officer Chidi Nwabuzor reports that on February 2, a surveillance team probing a case of money obtained under false pretense reported by Mrs. Joy Akhiobare and Mrs. Ijeoma Blessing Kalu arrested the suspects at Ugbiyokho community.
He said that the women were tricked into seeing the suspects for spiritual support after their businesses failed.
Nwabuzor said, “The suspects deceitfully obtained N850,000 from Joy Akhiobare and N26,000 from Ijeoma Blessing Kalu, respectively, under the pretense of providing spiritual help.”
He claims that the charm that the suspects used to threaten the women with death if they told anybody about the problem was found by the cops.
One of the suspects, Ganiyu Lukman, an Ekiti State native, acknowledged being a fake herbalist in an interview with newsmen, claiming he simply fooled the women out of N236,000.
“I arrived in Benin on January 16 and was taken into custody on February 2.” She brought one of her friends who wanted him to perform a money ceremony for him, he said. “One of the women came to tell me that she has a problem in her marriage and that I should help her as a native doctor,” he said.
