60 lawmakers move to terminate the presidential form of governance

A group of 60 lawmakers, known as the Parliamentary Group, has launched a campaign to end the country’s current presidential government and return to the parliamentary one used under the First Republic.

On Tuesday, during a session of the House of Representatives, the Parliamentary Group introduced a bill to amend the constitution.
During the plenary session, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and other lawmakers proposed three constitutional amendment bills.
During a press conference in the House Press Centre, Abdulsamad Dasuki, the group’s spokesperson, explained the key aspects of the proposals.

The MPs, led by Abdulsamad Dasuki, expressed unhappiness with the pricey presidential system and the president’s vast powers.

“No wonder the Nigerian President appears to be one of the most powerful presidents in the world,” Dasuki said.

He emphasized the flaws of the presidential system of administration, including the expensive expense of governance and the executive members’ enormous powers, which lack direct accountability to the public.

Confident in their efforts, parliamentarians established a target date of 2031 for the constitutional modification to ease the transition.

Dasuki emphasized that the group’s goal is to spark a discussion regarding the inefficiencies of the current parliamentary system.

“The bills presented today seek a return to the system of government adopted by our founders, which made governance accountable, responsible, responsive, and ultimately less expensive,” he said.
