FG: $800M ports rehabilitation fund almost ready

According to the Federal Government, the more than $800 million required for the nation’s ports to be renovated is virtually ready.

Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, made this announcement on Thursday in Apapa, Lagos, at the Nigerian Ports Authority’s presentation and inauguration of seven security patrol boats.
The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) announced in November that it would allocate more than $800 million for the rehabilitation of all Nigerian ports by the first quarter of 2024. The NPA also noted that nearly all Nigerian ports require maintenance and that it is beginning a significant overhaul, beginning with the Tincan Island and Apapa Ports in Lagos.

Oyetola did, however, stress the importance of updating the ports to comply with international standards.

“Once more, we are updating the ports in order to remain competitive with any port globally. We want the vessel’s turnaround time to be as short as possible, and I believe we are doing it on purpose.

“The President deserves our praise. The funding for the port’s renovation is virtually complete, and work will shortly get underway. stated Oyetola.
The administration of NPA was lauded by the former governor of Osun State for their initiative in purchasing the security patrol boats.

“I would want to express my gratitude to the NPA management for stepping forward to improve maritime security and safety. He stated, “We need to give security the kind of priority that it deserves because it is particularly important.”

“Without bolstering security, we cannot discuss realizing the full potential of the blue economy.”

The launch of the boats, according to NPA Managing Director Mohammed Bello-Koko, is evidence of the organization’s dedication to ongoing development as it moves closer to realizing “our strategic intent of becoming the maritime logistics hub for sustainable ports services in Africa from potential to actualities.”

Under the presidential priorities of the Federal Government of Nigeria, one of NPA’s objectives is enhanced marine safety, security, and conformance to internationally acceptable standards.

“Therefore, what we are seeing today is in line with the presidential directives concerning the performance of ministries, departments, and agencies and is in pursuit of accomplishing these deliverables,” he stated.
