Tinubu Approves Reinstatement of Historic National Anthem

President Bola Tinubu has officially endorsed the National Anthem Bill 2024, reinstating the historic anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during a joint session at the National Assembly, commemorating Nigeria’s 4th Republic’s 25th anniversary.

Tinubu’s preference for ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ over ‘Arise Oh Compatriots’ was expressed during a 2022 interview, where he advocated for the return of the former anthem. Authored by Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ served as Nigeria’s national anthem from independence in 1960 until 1978, before its recent readoption in May 2024.
