The Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) has announced plans to sue President Bola Tinubu following his signing of the National Anthem Act 2024, which reinstates the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” The act has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many stakeholders calling for proper consultation before making such a decision.
ALDRAP’s secretary, Tonye Jaja, issued a statement criticizing the enactment process, arguing that it did not meet constitutional requirements. The group claims there was no public hearing or opportunity for public contribution, contrasting with the process used in 1978. Additionally, they assert that the bill was not properly transmitted from the president to the Senate president and the speaker of the House of Representatives.
The organization also highlighted financial concerns, stating that the costs of implementing the new anthem, such as updating official documents and manpower expenses, would burden ordinary citizens without corresponding income increases. ALDRAP plans to name the president, the speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Senate President as respondents in the case.
