In an urgent bid to prevent a nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Nigeria Governors Forum have summoned the leadership of the Organized Labour for an emergency meeting tonight. This comes in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress’ declaration of an indefinite strike set to begin on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The strike announcement followed unsuccessful negotiations between the government and labour unions over a proposed minimum wage increase. Despite the government raising its offer to N60,000 from an initial N57,000, the unions deemed it insufficient. Labour unions had also revised their demand, reducing it by N3,000 to N494,000, but negotiations remained deadlocked.
The impending strike poses a significant threat to economic activities nationwide. The emergency meeting is seen as a last-ditch effort to resolve the impasse. The outcome will determine if the strike proceeds as planned or if a last-minute agreement can be reached.
