Labour Party Resolves to Retain Peter Obi Amid Internal Disputes

The Labour Party (LP) has affirmed its commitment to retaining its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, despite ongoing internal conflicts. During an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, factional National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi emphasized the party’s efforts to resolve the crisis politically, aiming to prevent Obi from joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and aligning with Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

Arabambi stated, “Politically, we will not allow the crisis to fester for long that we will now allow Mr Peter Obi to join Atiku. We knew their plans, that was why we said, ‘we need to explore a political solution between ourselves.’”

This comes in the wake of a legal battle where the FCT High Court initially restrained Julius Abure and others from acting as national officers of the Labour Party. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned this decision in March 2024, reinstating Abure and his colleagues. Justice Hamman Barka, leading a three-member panel, ruled that the FCT High Court had overstepped its jurisdiction in the party’s internal affairs and awarded ₦1 million to Abure and others.
