As the 10th National Assembly approaches its one-year milestone on June 13, 2024, a report has highlighted that 24 out of the 109 senators have yet to sponsor any bills since the assembly’s inauguration. Despite a total of 279 bills being introduced between July 13, 2023, and March 2024, notable senators, including former governors Adams Oshiomhole, Henry Seriake Dickson, Simon Lalong, and Abdulaziz Yari, have not proposed any legislation.
The report also revealed that, apart from the four former governors, other senators who have not sponsored any bills include Ahmad Lawan (Yobe North), Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), Oluwole Fasuyi Cyril (Ekiti North), Titus Tartenger Zam (Benue North-West), Peter Jiya (Niger South), Adegbonmire Adeniyi Ayodele (Ondo Central), and several others from various states and parties.
In contrast, 85 senators have been active in sponsoring bills. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) leads with 23 bills, followed by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (Kano North) with 17 bills, and Sani Musa (Niger East) with eight bills. Other prolific senators include Olamilekan Adeola (Ogun West), Partrick Ndubueze (Imo North), and Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central), each with seven bills.
The active participation of these senators contrasts sharply with the inactivity of their colleagues, underscoring a significant disparity in legislative contributions within the 10th National Assembly.
