Germany proved their intent to win Euro 2024 by overwhelming Scotland in the opening match, showcasing their dominance with a 5-1 victory. For the first time in their European Championship history, Germany scored three goals in the first half, setting the tone for the tournament.
The German onslaught began early, with 21-year-old midfielder Florian Wirtz scoring the opener, making him the youngest player to net a goal in a European Championship opening match. Jamal Musiala, also 21, doubled the lead in the 19th minute, further pressuring the Scottish defense. A harsh tackle by Scotland’s Ryan Porteous on İlkay Gündoğan led to a penalty and a red card for Porteous. Kai Havertz converted the penalty, making it 3-0 for Germany by halftime.
In the second half, Scotland showed some defensive improvement, but Germany’s Niclas Füllkrug added a fourth goal in the 68th minute. Scotland’s only goal came from an own goal by Antonio Rüdiger in the 87th minute. Emre Can sealed Germany’s 5-1 victory with a goal in injury time.
Germany will face Hungary next on June 19 at 5 p.m., while Scotland will play against Switzerland at 8 p.m. the same day.
