A three-storey building under construction in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, collapsed on Tuesday, trapping two individuals inside. The Nation reports that the building is allegedly owned by a member of the Ebonyi State Assembly and is situated near the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with one person already rescued and rushed to the emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. The remaining trapped individual is reportedly a dumb laborer. One of the laborers who narrowly escaped the collapse mentioned that the incident occurred without warning as he stepped away to wash his hands.
Emergency workers continue their efforts to rescue the trapped laborer, while the incident raises concerns about construction standards and safety in the region.
