10 Names of God and Their Meaning Pt.2

In this continuation, we will delve further into another set of names, each revealing unique attributes and promises.

These names not only enhance our understanding of who God is but also draw us closer to Him as we recognize His presence in various aspects of our lives. Join us as we continue this journey of discovery, growing in our knowledge and appreciation of the divine nature through His names.

5. Jehovah-Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)

God is Jehovah-Shalom—the Lord is Peace.

“When Gideon saw he was the angel of the Lord, he said, ‘Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel face to face. The Lord said to him, Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die. Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and named it The LORD is Peace.” (Judges 6:22-24)

There is a peace that only God can provide, a peace that surpasses all human understanding. Amidst trials and tribulations, God’s peace can envelop us, offering profound comfort. This peace, which only Jehovah-Shalom can give, is a mystery to those who do not follow Christ closely.

Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

6. El Elyon (The Most High God)

God is El Elyon—the Most High God, your Sovereign.

This name emphasizes God’s sovereignty and supreme power over all creation. It highlights His position above all other gods and powers, affirming that He alone is worthy of our highest praise and worship.

Psalm 57:2, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” Here, David calls upon El Elyon, recognizing God’s sovereignty in fulfilling His divine purposes. It’s a reminder that God Most High oversees and orchestrates the events of our lives for His glory and our good.

Daniel 4:34-35, “At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done?'”

King Nebuchadnezzar, after experiencing God’s humbling power, acknowledges the supremacy of El Elyon. This passage underscores God’s absolute sovereignty over all earthly and heavenly realms, affirming that He alone rules with ultimate authority.

In moments of uncertainty and difficulty, calling upon El Elyon reminds us of His sovereign power and faithful presence. He is not only the Creator and Sustainer of the universe but also our personal Redeemer and Protector. Trusting in El Elyon means resting in the assurance that He is in control, no matter the circumstances.

7. El Kanna (The Jealous God)

God is El Kanna—the Jealous God.

“You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.” (Exodus 34:14)

What sets Christianity apart from other religions? God is relentlessly pursuing you, desiring nothing to take His place in your life or heart. Idolatry today can be anything from material possessions to personal relationships. If Satan can distract you from what is most important—an intimate relationship with God—he believes he can win the battle for lordship in your life. Be mindful of what occupies your time, thoughts, and habits.

“For, I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.” (Exodus 20:5)

El Kanna’s affection for you runs deep.

8. El Roi (The God Who Sees)

God is El Roi—He sees you.

“Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the LORD, who had spoken to her. She said, You are the God who sees me. She also said, have I truly seen the One who sees me?” (Genesis 16:13)

Have you ever felt forgotten by God? Do you feel like you’re struggling through life with no one noticing or caring?

Hagar likely felt the same. As an unloved servant who became pregnant by her master and then mistreated by her mistress, she ran away. But an angel of the Lord found her, eager to tell her that God had heard her cry of distress (Genesis 16).

El Roi sees you and He cares.

9. Jehovah Ro’i (God the Shepherd)

God is Jehovah Ro’i—He is your Shepherd

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)

What about you?

Do you sometimes feel alone, like you’re wandering through life without guidance? Like a sheep without a shepherd? Jesus is your good shepherd. He is always with you, watching over you. Even when you feel too weak to go on, He is there to carry you through your toughest moments. He is your Jehovah Ro’i.

10. Jehovah Nissi (The Lord, Our Banner)

God is Jehovah Nissi—He is my banner

“Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-nissi (which means ‘the LORD is my banner’). (Exodus 17:15)

For the people of Israel, banners were familiar symbols often attached to poles or standards. These banners represented deliverance and salvation. When Moses held up his hands, the Israelites depended on God for their assurance and victory. Although God is referred to as Yahweh Nissi only once in the Bible, His work is evident throughout Scripture. We learn that the Lord will fight for us, the battle belongs to Him, and He is a God of deliverance.

Are you facing a desperate situation in your life? Are you struggling to break free from what holds you back? Call on Jehovah Nissi. He will watch over you, cover you, and protect you.
